Requirements for Cosmetology Students

Regular students must hold a high school diploma or G.E.D. Prospective students must be 17 years old before enrollment, be free of contagious disease, be physically capable, and possess good moral character.

The Maine Board of Barbering and Cosmetology may refuse to issue a license or registration to any person who attempts to obtain a registration or license by means of fraud, misrepresentation, or concealment of material facts. Also, an applicant can be denied registration or license if convicted of a crime in any court, other than a minor traffic violation, if the acts for which the person was convicted are found by the board to have a direct bearing on the person serving the public.

State Requirements

Prior to being allowed to register as a student:

1. A student must be 16 years of age
2. Must have completed the tenth grade in a secondary school

Prior to taking the Maine State Board of Barbering & Cosmetology Exam:

1. A student must be 17 years of age
2. Must have SATISFACTORILY completed a course of cosmetology with a minimum of 1,500 hours over a minimum of nine months in a school of cosmetology.
